CERN School of Computing 2002

School logistics

Date and place

The twenty-fifth CERN School of Computing will be held at the Hotel Oriente, Vico Equense, Italy, from Sunday 15 September to Saturday 28 September 2002.

Participation

The School is open to postgraduate students and research workers with a few years' experience in elementary particle physics, in computing or in related fields. The number of participants will be of the order of 80, mostly from the CERN Member States or from laboratories closely associated with CERN. Applicants from countries that are not Member States of CERN will be considered subject to availability.

Personal contacts and informal discussions among the participants during leisure time are an important aspect of the School. For this reason, students are asked to note that they should not be accompanied by family members or friends.

Accommodation

Participants will be accommodated in the Hotel Oriente (http://www.hoteloriente.it/), 100 metres from the beach, overlooking the sea.  All students participating at the School will be lodged in comfortable double rooms with private bathrooms.

The Hotel is a base for the Ramblers Holidays Association which organizes rambles/walks on the Sorrento Peninsula and in the Lattari Mountains. Any interested students should come equipped for such activity (walking shoes, etc.)

Language

The working language of the School will be English. There will be no simultaneous translation. Participants should therefore have sufficient understanding of English to enable them to benefit from the School.

Travel

Students should reach Vico Equense for registration during the afternoon or early evening of Sunday, 15 September.  Registration will take place at the Hotel Oriente.  You should note that lunch on the day of arrival is not provided. The School will end on the morning of Saturday, 28 September after breakfast.

Transport to Vico Equense (Naples):

Naples International Airport (1 hr via the motorway to Vico Equense).  There are direct flights into Naples from Paris, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Munich and Brussels, in addition to national flights from Rome and Milan.  The train service from Rome is frequent, and the trip takes about two hours.

Vico Equense is easily reached from Naples:  via the Ferrovia Circumvesuviana train (55 minutes) or by car (45 minutes) via the Naples – Pompei – Salerno motorway and then along the breathtaking coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula.  There is also a comfortable bus service “Autolinea Curreri Viaggi” from Naples International Airport to Vico Equense.

It is hoped to provide shuttle services both from/to Naples airport for those arriving on Saturday 15 September and leaving on 28 September.
