The 35th CERN School of Computing will be held at the Uppsala University, Sweden from  Monday 13th of August to Friday 24th August 2012 (1)

 

(1) Students will have to arrive on the Sunday 12th August and leave on the Saturday 25th of August 2012.

Participation

The School is open to postgraduate students and research workers with a few years' experience in elementary particle physics, in computing or in related fields.  The number of participants will be limited to 60 Applicants. They may come from CERN Member States as well as from other countries.

 

Personal contacts and informal discussions among the participants during leisure time are an important aspect of the School.  For this reason, participants are asked to note that they should not be accompanied by family members or friends.

The Park Inn Hotel is neighbouring the Uppsala Central Station on the East side of the city(see Map)

Rooms 

  • Students will be lodged in a double twin room.
  • Room service included on the cost of the room will comprise: towel, hair dryer and breakfast.

Language

The working language of the School will be English. There will be no simultaneous translation. Participants should therefore have sufficient understanding of English to enable them to benefit from the School.

Registration

Participants should reach the Park Inn Hotel Uppsala for on-site registration during the afternoon or early evening of Sunday, 12th of August 2012

 

Registration will take place in the hall of the Hotel from 14:00 to 19:00  

 

For any late arrival, please inform Fabienne before Sunday 12th August 2012.

  • Participants should note that lunch on the day of arrival (Sunday 12th of August 2012) is not provided, but the dinner is.

  • The School will end on the morning of Saturday 25th August 2012, after breakfast.

Travel

By Air
Fly to Stockholm Arlanda Airport, which is actually closer to Uppsala than Stockholm, so you do not need to go by Stockholm on your way here. How to get to Uppsala from Arlanda is described below.  Map of the airport.

By Train from Arlanda Airport
Going by train from Arlanda to Uppsala is very convenient. The Upptåget-train leave twice an hour from Arlanda Airport and the trip takes about 20 minutes, see UL for further information. The trains leave from SkyCity (between terminal 4 and 5). Purchase your ticket before you enter the train and validate it on the train, Ticket Desk: SJ Resebutik/Travel Office, in Sky City (next to Terminal 5).The price is about 140 SEK.

By Bus from Arlanda Airport
Bus 801 to Uppsala leaves twice an hour from bus stop No. 13 (all terminals). The bus ticket is bought on the bus and the price is about 100 SEK. The trip takes about 50 minutes.  You cannot pay the ticket cash on the bus. There are vending machines at Arlanda airport terminals 2, 4 and 5 (Quickomat) where you can buy a one way ticket for the bus. Credit card only.    See UL for timetable and further information.

The buses and trains from Arlanda stop at Uppsala Central Station.

Other Stockholm Aiports
Upon arrival at Stockholm-Bromma Airport, Stockholm

S
tockholm-Bromma airport is located 9 km west of Stockholm Central Station and 70 km south of Uppsala. The airport bus runs between Bromma airport and Stockholm city bus terminal, next to the central station.
·         Frequency: the timetable runs to connect with flight arrivals and departures.
·         Cost: single ticket: SEK 79 (approximately. EUR 8) or a return ticket: SEK 150 (approximately EUR 15).
·         Journey time to Stockholm: 20 minutes (depending on traffic).
·         Ticket Desk: you buy your ticket from the ticket-vending machines or on-line on the flygbussarna.se website. E-ticket purchased on-line is valid for 12 months from the purchase date.
From Stockholm Central Station to Uppsala Central Station:
·         Frequency: 2 trains per hour from 6 am to 11 pm.
·         Journey time: 40 minutes.
·         Cost: about SEK 60 (approximately EUR 7).
·         Ticket Desk: you buy your ticket from a ticket desk in the main hall of the station or from a ticket-vending machine on the platform.

Upon arrival at Stockholm-Skavsta Airport, city of Nyköping  
Stockholm-Skavsta airport is located 110 km south of Stockholm Central Station and 177 km south of Uppsala. Airport shuttle buses run between Skavsta Airport and Stockholm Central Station.
·         Frequency: about 30 minutes after every flight arrival. The bus waits for delayed flights. Timetable online.
·         Journey time to Stockholm: about 80 minutes.
·         Cost: SEK 150 (approximately EUR 15) single ticket, SEK 249 (approximately EUR 25) round trip.
·         Ticket Desk: you buy your ticket from the ticket-vending machines or on-line on the flygbussarna.se website. E-ticket purchased on-line is valid for 12 months from the purchase date.
From Stockholm Central Station to Uppsala Central Station.
·         Frequency: 2 trains per hour from 6 am to 11 pm.
·         Journey time: 40 minutes. Cost: about SEK 60 (approximately EUR 7).
·         Ticket Desk: you buy your ticket from a ticket desk in the main hall of the station or from a ticket-vending machine on the platform.

Upon arrival at Stockholm-Västerås Airport, city of Västerås
Västerås airport is located 77 km west of Uppsala.
Bus:
·         Frequency: The timetable is adjusted to Ryanair's arrivals and departures at Västerås Airport.
·         Journey time: 75 minutes.
·         Cost: Single ticket SEK 140 (EUR 14), Return ticket SEK 250 (EUR 25).
·         "Airporter bus" connects Västerås airport and Uppsala www.airporter.se.

Travel arrangements

Participants are on their own to organize their travel to and from the school location. The school does not organize travel tickets for participants.

Cost

The total fees of the School is 1300 per participant.

Fee: What it covers

The total fee of the school covers:

  • Tuition and handouts

  • Accommodation including breakfast and dinners in the Park Inn Hotel Uppsala from Sunday, 12th of August to the breakfast on Saturday 25th of August 2012.

  • Lunches, and two daily coffee breaks on the campus from  Monday 13th of August to Friday 24th  of August 2012

  • All organized social activities (sport, excursions, special dinners ...) of which details will be given at a later time.

Note on meals

  • Participants are warned that all lunches and diners will have a common, buffet-style, menu. There will be no a-la-carte facility. It will not be possible to accommodate special dietary restrictions.

Fee: What it does NOT cover

  • The fee does not include travel expenses from the participants' working place to Park Inn Hotel Uppsala and back.

  • Participants arriving before Sunday evening 12th of August or leaving after Saturday 25th of August a.m. will be entirely on their own: the school will neither arrange for their accommodation nor will cover any cost associated to their extended stay.

  • Any extra cost incurred during the stay (including private excursions, private expenses in the hotel and on the campus, private transport costs, private meals, ...) will not be borne by the school organization.

  • Any cost incurred by a participant not following the official excursion or social  programme (e.g. meal cost of a participant not attending an excursion which includes a meal) will not be borne by the school organization.

Subsidy and assiduity

The actual expenses per student exceed the total fees requested to participants. The difference between  the actual cost and the  total fee is borne by the school organization.  Academic participants are therefore subsidized, and complete assiduity to the entire scientific programme is mandatory.

Candidates should ensure that not only have they completed the Web Application Form, but that a signed formal letter of reference (on formal headed paper from the applicant's institute/organization) from their professor or supervisor is uploaded on the registration site by the 1st of May 2012 at the latest.

In addition, a certification form  must be filled in and signed by the applicant's professor or supervisor (and not by the applicant)  and uploaded on the registration site by 1st of May 2012.

 

Note: applications are for the entire programme. It is not possible to register for one theme only.

 

Selection of participants

The number of participants is limited to 60.

 

The selection of the participants will be made by the Advisory Committee and participants will be informed of the outcome of their application by the beginning of June 2012.

 

Cancellation

The CERN School of Computing Advisory Committee reserves the right to refuse reimbursement of part or all of the fee in the case of late cancellation.  However, each case of cancellation would be considered individually.

 

Replacement

In all cases of withdrawal or cancellation, whether last-minute or otherwise, the choice of a replacement, if any, will lie entirely with the Advisory Committee and not with the laboratory or institute where the withdrawing participant works.

 

Liability and Insurance

Participation in the CERN School of Computing and in all activities organized in the framework thereof (whether by CERN or by third parties) is at the participant's own risk and neither CERN nor the third parties concerned accept any liability with regard thereto. Equipment and materials made available to participants during the CERN School of Computing are made available on an "as-is-basis" without any warranties express or implied. Their use shall be under the sole responsibility and at the sole risk of the participants.

Participants shall be solely responsible and liable regarding their property and CERN shall have no liability in case of loss, theft or damage thereof.

Participants shall ensure that, there shall at all times during the latter's participation in the CERN School of Computing be insurance cover against illnesses and accidents valid in the place of venue, and against disability and death resulting from illnesses and accidents of the participants. The participant shall hold CERN free and harmless from, and indemnify it for any cost or expense resulting from the situation where any part of the insurance cover detailed above is not in place.
