Sports at CSC2012

Welcome to the CSC Sports Programme

Introduced a few years ago, the sport programme proposes two to three hours of sport every afternoon to those who are interested. The aim of the programme is not only to provide a healthy work-life balance before the late afternoon working sessions begin, but it also provides additional opportunities for interactions between students, lecturers and organizers. Several of the lecturers act as sport instructors or organizers.

We hope that all students attending the school  will appreciate and participate in the programme.

Francois Fluckiger, Director of the CERN School of Computing

Sports at CSC is supported by the CERN Medical Service and is part of CERN's  Move+Eat better programme.

What are the objectives of the sports programme?

  • The participation to sport activities is fully voluntary (as is the participation to other social activities)

  • The aim is to provide opportunities for refreshing activities in particular before the final afternoon working sessions (as an alternative to the free study hours)

  • It also provides additional opportunities for interactions between students and lecturers / organizers

What, when and where?

  • The daily sport activities will be proposed during afternoons in the Campus 1477 Sports Centre, 10 min walk from the Lunch cafeteria and the tuition building.

  • One special Outdoor Sports-Day (Thursday 16 of August) is proposed. Participants will select one  from 4 proposed sport activities. For those who prefer resting, a free outing (Skogshyddan area) is proposed for this afternoon.

  • Tennis Tournament  is organized the second Wednesday afternoon

  • The CSC traditional football match, which will take place the second Wednesday afternoon in a large indoor football pitch.

This year, the tennis courts are not within walking distance from the campus. Therefore, the traditional daily tennis lessons cannot be organized.

However, a tennis afternoon, including a tennis tournament is organized Wednesday 22 August.

The tennis afternoon is open to everyone, beginners or more experienced players

  • Beginners may take this opportunity to get a first experience and practice tennis, but they are  also welcome to register to the tournament to accept  the challenge of meeting more experienced players.
  • The more  experienced players are all invited to join the tournament.

The tennis afternoon will take place in a tennis center located a couple of kilometers north of  the campus.

Transportation will be organized to the tennis place.

After the tennis session, the bus will drop those playing or supporting the football match to the football place.

Four courts have been reserved

Rackets and balls will be provided, though those accustomed to their own racket nay wish to bring it.

Tennis Tournament

As part of the Tennis Afternoon, a tennis tournament is organised the Wednesday 22 of August (14:00- 16:00).

It is open to any  player, including beginners who may wish to accept  the challenge of meeting more experienced players. However, they may prefer to simply practice and they are mots welcome to do so.
