Date and Place

The 31st CERN School of Computing will be held in Gjøvik University College,  Gjøvik , Norway, from Monday 25 August to Friday, 5 September 2008(1)

(1) Students will have to arrive on the Sunday 24 August and leave on the Saturday 06 September 2008.

Country

Participation

The School is open to postgraduate students and research workers with a few years' experience in elementary particle physics, in computing or in related fields.  The number of participants will be limited to 80.  Applicants may come from CERN Member States as well as from countries that are not Member States of CERN.

Personal contacts and informal discussions among the participants during leisure time are an important aspect of the School.  For this reason, participants are asked to note that they should not be accompanied by family members or friends.

Language

The working language of the School will be English. There will be no simultaneous translation. Participants should therefore have sufficient understanding of English to enable them to benefit from the School.

Registration

Participants should reach for on-site registration during the afternoon or early evening of Sunday, 24 August 2008

Registration will take place at the reception of the Thon Hotel from 13:00 to 19:00.

  • Participants should note that lunch on the day of arrival (Sunday 24 August 2008) is not provided, but the dinner is.

  • The School will end on the morning of Saturday 06 September 2008,  after breakfast.

Travel

The Oslo Lufthavn airport is located at  100 km from Gjøvik and the Thon Hotel.

The train station as well the bus station are situated at 200m from the Hotel.

The easiest way of getting to Gjøvik from the airport is the Airport Coach. The bus departs every two hours from the airport and arrives just outside the train station in Gjøvik.  The trip takes 1 hour and 35 minutes.

Time table: Airport Coaches from Oslo Lufthavn (airport) to Gjøvik - Linje 15 . (Price: 1 way ticket ~240NOK = ~31 euros - Tickets available by the bus driver - Payment in NOK cash only - Bank machines at the airport)

An alternative is to take the Airport Train to Oslo http://www.flytoget.no/eng/ (about 20 minutes - a high-speed train) and then jump on a train to Gjøvik. The train from Oslo to Gjøvik departs every two hours and spends about two hours on this trip. This alternative is 1.5 to 2 times more expensive than the direct transport of the airport coach

Train schedule: http://www.nsb.no/?lang=en_US or http://www.nsb.no/timetables/ or http://www.rutebok.no

Travel arrangements

Participants are on their own to organize their travel to and from the school location. The school does not organize travel tickets for participants.

Cost

The fee of the School is 1700 Euros per participant working in or affiliated to a public not-for profit organization (laboratory, institute, university, ... ). In the following we call such participants "academic participants". For participants working in for-profit companies, the cost is 2000 Euros.

Beware: The financial support from the EU ended in 2007. Therefore, in 2008, the CSC organizers can no longer offer EU grants to participants

Fee: What it covers

The total fee of the school (that is 1700 Euros for "academic participants"), should be paid to the account below prior to the school. This amount covers

  • Tuition and handouts

  • Lunch, two daily coffee breaks, dinner and accommodation in double rooms at the Thon Hotel, from dinner on Sunday, 24 August to breakfast on Saturday, 06 September 2008.

  • Some social activities, of which details will be given at a later time..

Note on meals

  • Participants are warned that all meals except the closing dinner will have a common, buffet-style, menu. There will be no a-la-carte facility. It will not be possible to accommodate special dietary restrictions.

Fee: What it does NOT cover
  • The fee does not include travel expenses from the participants' working place to the Thon Hotel and back.

  • Participants arriving before Sunday evening 24th of August or leaving after Saturday 05th of September will be entirely on their own: the school will neither arrange for their accommodation nor will cover any cost associated to their extended stay.

  • Any extra cost incurred during the stay (including private excursions, private expenses at hotel, private transport costs, private meals, ...) will not be born by the school organization.

  • Any cost incurred by a participant not following the official excursion or social  programme (e.g. meal cost of a participant not attending an excursion which includes a meal) will not be born by the school organization.

Method of
payment

The sum total fee (1700 Euros for academic participants. 2000 Euros for the other participants) should be paid prior to the school into the following account upon receipt of the letter of acceptance.

Subsidy and assiduity

The actual expenses per student exceed the  total fee of 1700 requested to "academic participants". The difference between  the actual cost and the  total fee is born by the school organization.  Academic participants are therefore subsidized, and complete assiduity to the entire scientific programme is mandatory.
